Paredes uncertain of Argentina future after ban, Messi exit

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has expressed uncertainty about his future with the national team, citing a significant FIFA suspension and the recent retirement of Lionel Messi as major factors. The 32-year-old player stated it will be difficult to continue playing for Argentina following a 10-match ban imposed by FIFA for his involvement in a confrontation after the 2026 World Cup final. The altercation occurred at the final whistle after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0. During the ensuing scuffle, Paredes was seen shoving Spain midfielder Gavi to the ground and grabbing defender Eric Garcia by the throat. In addition to Paredes' 10-game suspension, teammate Nahuel Molina received a seven-game ban, and Thiago Almada was suspended for one game. Paredes and Molina were also each fined 90,000. Paredes has called the 10-match ban "exaggerated," suggesting that Gavi initiated the physical contact by punching him. He has not yet discussed his future with national team coach Lionel Scaloni but indicated that such a conversation is planned. Adding to the uncertainty is Lionel Messi's decision to retire from international football.
