Palantir CEO Calls for AI Liability Rules and Possible Nationalization

Palantir Technologies CEO Alex Karp called for enforceable artificial intelligence rules, civil and criminal liability for irresponsible developers, and possible nationalization of frontier AI labs in a CNBC interview on Thursday. Karp argued that leading AI companies, including Anthropic, are advocating for government oversight primarily to shield themselves from lawsuits over potential harms caused by their technology. Speaking on CNBC's Squawk on the Street, Karp stated that the first line of defense should be holding companies accountable for their own actions. "You're liable for your own actions," he said, adding that civil and criminal exposure for reckless developers is a stronger check than voluntary safety pledges. Karp suggested that if private labs face a wave of customer lawsuits, nationalization may become necessary. Karp's comments arrive amid a polarized debate within the AI industry. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently published an essay warning that AI capabilities are advancing too quickly for researchers to understand and control, urging a slowdown. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk have expressed agreement with the need to pace development.
