Palace Reaffirms Harry and Meghan's Private Citizen Status

Published 10 September 2026

Buckingham Palace has publicly reiterated that Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, remain private citizens and are not working members of the Royal Family. The statement, issued on behalf of King Charles III, confirmed that the couple will not use their His Royal Highness or Her Royal Highness titles and that their charitable endeavors are undertaken in a private capacity. This clarification comes shortly after the couple's return to Britain for an extended stay. A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan expressed surprise at the timing and content of the letter, stating they had not been consulted on its release. The palace, however, indicated the statement was necessary to avoid doubt or confusion regarding the couple's status, particularly for government and military bodies. Sources suggested the palace felt compelled to issue the clarification due to concerns that the Sussexes might be undertaking activities associated with working royals, potentially causing confusion about their official standing.
