Pacific Islands Forum Opens in Palau Amid Leader Absences

The 55th Pacific Islands Forum opened in Palau on Monday, August 31, 2026, with the absence of at least five heads of government casting a shadow over the summit intended to demonstrate regional unity. Leaders from Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, and Kiribati will not attend the meeting in Koror, which runs through September 4, though they are expected to be represented by ministers or senior officials. Palau is one of only three Pacific island nations, along with Tuvalu and the Marshall Islands, that maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan. China, which views Taiwan as its own territory, has questioned Palau's inclusion of Taiwan in the forum. Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chialung was invited for side events held alongside the main forum but is not a formal dialogue partner. Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale arrived in Palau but left early on Sunday to face a no-confidence motion filed by Home Affairs Minister Manasseh Maelanga. Maelanga accused Wale of making key decisions without proper consultation.
