Opera adds opt-in auto-VPN for public Wi-Fi

Opera has added an opt-in setting that automatically activates its built-in free VPN when its desktop browser detects a public or unsecured Wi-Fi network. The feature is intended to remove the need for users to remember to switch the VPN on each time they join such a network, but it does not work until enabled manually in settings. Opera says users must turn on the option labeled “Always use VPN on Public WiFi.” Once enabled, the browser is designed to activate the VPN when it detects a public network. One report says it disconnects after the user leaves that network and that the VPN button changes color while protection is active. Opera has said the feature is initially rolling out to users in the United States and France, with availability expected to expand to other regions. One account described the rollout as global, but the available information does not clarify whether that refers to current access or a broader rollout plan. The feature was also listed in Opera Developer 137 release notes earlier in September, according to one report. The change applies to Opera’s free VPN, which has been built into the browser since 2016.
