OpenAI Samsung deepen AI chip collaboration

Published 9 September 2026

OpenAI is deepening its collaboration with Samsung Electronics, focusing on joint research and production of next-generation artificial intelligence chips, the AI company confirmed. The partnership also includes expanded enterprise AI services in South Korea, where adoption of OpenAI's tools has surged. Harrison Kim, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, announced the expanded tie-up at a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. He stated that joint production and research on next-generation chips represents one of OpenAI's most successful collaborative efforts with Samsung to date, signaling a move to control its own hardware pipeline. While specific technical details and the identity of the chips involved remain undisclosed, the collaboration suggests significant volume requirements, potentially involving Samsung Foundry alongside TSMC, which manufactured OpenAI's first custom inference chip, Jalapeno. Beyond chip development, Samsung Electronics is a major user of OpenAI's enterprise solutions.
