OpenAI in Early Talks for New Funding at Up to $1.5 Trillion Valuation

Published 16 September 2026

OpenAI is in early discussions with investors about a new private funding round that could value the artificial intelligence company between $1.2 trillion and $1.5 trillion, according to people familiar with the matter. The talks, which were initiated by investors rather than the company, come as OpenAI prepares for an eventual initial public offering that CEO Sam Altman has stated will not occur in 2026. The potential valuation would represent a significant increase from OpenAI's most recent private valuation of $852 billion, which was set in March when the company raised $122 billion in committed capital. If completed at the higher end of the range, the new round would crown OpenAI as the world's most valuable privately held company. People familiar with the discussions said investors recently approached OpenAI with a proposal to invest at a $1.2 trillion valuation. However, OpenAI believes it should be valued at at least $1.5 trillion, citing increased customer traction with its coding tool Codex and its latest AI models, GPT6 Astra and GPT5.6 Sol. The conversations are at an early stage, and the final figure could change over the coming months.
