OpenAI faces 30 new lawsuits over Canada school shooting

OpenAI is facing 30 new lawsuits from teachers, students, and a principal who were present during the February 10, 2026, mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada. The complaints, filed in U.S. federal court in California, allege the company aided and abetted the attack by failing to alert law enforcement despite internal warnings about the shooter’s activity on its ChatGPT platform. The lawsuits, filed by the law firm Edelson PC, add to seven initial cases brought in April. They claim OpenAI’s automated safety system flagged the shooter, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, for “gun violence activity and planning” in June 2025, roughly eight months before the attack. According to the filings, an internal safety team reviewed the flagged conversations and recommended notifying the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Instead, the company deactivated Van Rootselaar’s account but did not contact authorities. The complaints allege Van Rootselaar subsequently created a new account and continued using ChatGPT.
