OpenAI commits $1B to cyber defense for critical infrastructure

OpenAI announced a $1 billion initiative on Thursday to subsidize access to its cybersecurity tools for critical infrastructure operators and other under-resourced organizations, a move aimed at bolstering defenses against increasingly sophisticated AI-enabled attacks. The program, called Daybreak for Frontline Defenders, will provide discounted access to OpenAI's cybersecurity models, training, and technical support over the next six months, starting in the United States before expanding to partner countries. The commitment targets organizations that protect essential services but often lack dedicated security budgets, including water utilities, electric grid operators, state and local governments, community banks, nonprofits, and open-source software maintainers. The support covers subsidized access to Daybreak, OpenAI's cybersecurity product, which is already in use by thousands of defenders across approximately 2,000 approved organizations. The program runs in two tiers: Daybreak Blue uses standard models for routine defensive work, while Daybreak Red provides vetted teams with specialized cyber models for more sensitive tasks.
