OpenAI ChatGPT Ads Reach $1 Billion Annualized Revenue

Published 31 August 2026

OpenAI announced on Monday that its advertising business within ChatGPT has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days since its launch, marking a significant milestone as the company prepares for a potential initial public offering. The rapid achievement underscores the growing demand for advertising within AI-powered conversations and provides OpenAI with a major new revenue stream beyond subscriptions and enterprise contracts. The company began testing ads inside ChatGPT in the United States in February 2026. In an August 31 statement, OpenAI confirmed that tens of thousands of advertisers are now using the platform, which is available in more than 40 countries. The $1 billion figure represents an annualized run rate, meaning the pace of revenue generation, rather than total revenue collected over the past year. This milestone arrives as OpenAI moves closer to a possible IPO, with the company valued at $852 billion following a funding round in March 2026. To fuel further growth, OpenAI is expanding its self-service advertising tools.
