One Dead, 25 Missing After Migrant Boat Sinks Off Greece

At least one person has died and 25 are missing after a boat carrying migrants sank near the Greek island of Gavdos, with search and rescue operations ongoing amid strong winds. The Greek coastguard reported that 51 people were rescued from the partially submerged vessel, which went down south of Gavdos, an island about 320 kilometers from the Libyan coast. Survivors told authorities that 77 people were on board when the boat sank. The rescued individuals were picked up by nearby vessels and transported to Crete, where they are undergoing registration and processing. Under Greek law, undocumented migrants typically face immediate arrest and temporary confinement before transfer to detention camps on the mainland. The search operation involves multiple ships, boats, Frontex aircraft, and a coastguard helicopter, but strong winds in the area are hampering efforts. One rescued person was found unconscious and taken to Chania General Hospital for medical treatment. The rescued group is expected to be transferred to a reception centre in Agyia, Chania, for processing before potential movement to mainland Greece.
