One dead, 10 injured in Bronx apartment fire

A fire at a six-story apartment building in the Morris Heights neighborhood of the Bronx killed one person and injured 10 others Wednesday morning, according to fire officials. A 31-year-old man was in critical but stable condition after jumping from a window to escape the flames, officials said. The blaze was reported around 7:45 a.m. at 1484 Montgomery Avenue. Firefighters found the man on the sidewalk when they arrived, FDNY Deputy Chief Andrew Holzmaier said. The person who died was found inside the apartment where the fire was believed to have started and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials had not released that person’s name. The fire spread from the apartment into neighboring units and apartments above, reaching the space between the top-floor ceiling and the roof, Holzmaier said. He said much of the fire’s extension occurred through shared bathroom walls containing pipes and electrical lines. Wind may also have contributed to the spread, he said.
