Obama Family Mourns Death of Dog Sunny
Former President Barack Obama announced the death of the family's Portuguese Water Dog, Sunny, on September 16, 2026. The dog, who was 13 years old, died on September 15, 2026. The cause of death was not disclosed. Obama shared the news in a personal tribute on social media, describing Sunny as a "cherished member of our family" and a "force of nature." He wrote that the family adopted Sunny in August 2013 during his second term as president, and that she immediately became a beloved companion to the family and their first dog, Bo. In his remembrance, Obama highlighted Sunny's energetic and athletic personality. He noted she would leap over hedges on the South Lawn, chase squirrels, and was happiest when the family played with her. He also described her as fiercely protective of Bo, who was older and less alert. "She was fiercely protective of Bo, who she rightly sensed wasn't always as alert and attentive as she was," Obama wrote. The former president also shared some of Sunny's quirks. Despite being a Portuguese Water Dog, she disliked getting wet. He described her as a "loud and sloppy drinker" who preferred people to other dogs.
