NYC Mayor Mamdani Unveils 10-Year Plan to End Traffic Deaths

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has unveiled a comprehensive 10-year plan to eliminate traffic fatalities, marking a major overhaul of the city's Vision Zero initiative. The 50-page "Vision Zero Reimagined" plan, released Tuesday, contains over 100 commitments aimed at reducing annual traffic deaths to zero by 2036. The plan builds on the original Vision Zero program launched in 2014, which city data shows has contributed to a 16% reduction in traffic fatalities, from an average of 287 to 241 annual deaths. However, officials acknowledged that preventable tragedies persist, necessitating a more aggressive strategy. A central component of the new plan is a commitment to make at least 1,000 intersections safer each year using "hardened daylighting"-the replacement of parking spaces near corners with physical barriers to improve visibility. This represents a shift from previous commitments to use signs, which officials now acknowledge are less effective. The initiative reverses a policy stance from the prior administration, which had expressed concerns that such measures could create new dangers. The plan also targets the city's most dangerous drivers.
