NYC Mayor Mamdani releases first Racial Equity Plan

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released the city's first comprehensive Racial Equity Plan on September 1, 2026, a 400-page blueprint aimed at reducing longstanding disparities in housing, healthcare, education, and employment. The release followed a court ruling that found both the current and previous administrations had violated the law by missing mandated deadlines for the report. The plan, which was legally required under a 2022 voter referendum, outlines eight broad citywide goals and more than 200 agency-specific objectives. It is designed to directly influence future city budgeting and policy decisions. "For too long, government has been willing to acknowledge inequality without setting goals for ending it. This plan changes that," Mayor Mamdani said in a statement. "These commitments are specific, measurable, and public, and New Yorkers should hold us accountable for delivering on them." The final document was developed after a 30-day public comment period on a preliminary version released in April.
