NYC Mayor Mamdani Creates Office of Worker Power
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has established the Mayor's Office of Worker Power (MOWP), a new municipal agency designed to bolster worker organizing and connect laborers with essential resources. The initiative, announced on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2026, aims to provide a dedicated city government channel for workers seeking to improve their conditions, wages, and overall workplace power. The MOWP will operate across city agencies, focusing on outreach, education, policy development, research, and strategic partnerships. Its mandate includes convening rank-and-file workers, union leaders, and various worker groups, such as immigrant and gig workers, to address pressing labor issues. The office plans to hold public hearings, provide referrals to support organizations, and coordinate research on challenges facing workers, including new technologies, misclassification, and climate-related safety risks. Mayor Mamdani stated that the office was created to "put the full weight of City Hall behind the people who keep New York running.
