Nyati to remain Eskom chair for another three years

Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said Cabinet had chosen Mteto Nyati to serve another three-year term as chair of Eskom’s board, extending his leadership as the utility moves from improving generation performance to planning its role in a changing electricity market. Eskom’s board said the extension runs through November 2029. Ramokgopa announced the decision on Friday, September 25, describing continuity as important for the utility’s next phase. Nyati’s existing term was due to end in October. He joined Eskom’s board in October 2022 and became chair the following year, according to the reports. The minister said the board must develop a roadmap for Eskom’s future, including its generation mix, transmission expansion, commercial position and financial sustainability. He outlined planning horizons of three, five and 10 years, but no delivery deadline was specified. The roadmap is intended to guide decisions as electricity-sector reforms bring more participants into the market and alter Eskom’s traditional role. Eskom reported a R30.3 billion profit after tax for the financial year ended March 2026, its second consecutive profitable year.
