NVIDIA Plans 2GW AI Expansion in Australia

NVIDIA has announced a significant expansion of its artificial intelligence infrastructure in Australia, partnering with eight local data center and cloud companies to build what it terms AI factories. The initiative aims to deliver up to two gigawatts of AI compute capacity across the country by 2027. The named partners include Firmus, Sharon AI, IREN, ResetData, Megaport, CDC, NEXTDC, and AirTrunk. An AI factory, as defined by NVIDIA, represents a full-stack arrangement that integrates compute, networking, software, and reference designs built around its DSX platform and CUDA ecosystem. This approach aims to convert independent infrastructure providers into deployments of NVIDIA's architecture. The projected two gigawatts of capacity is substantial, roughly equivalent to the output of two large nuclear reactors, and comes at a time when Australia's grid operator has expressed concerns about firm capacity in its eastern states. Under the arrangement, NVIDIA will supply its GPUs, networking hardware, software, and ecosystem support, while the partner companies will provide or operate the physical infrastructure, including land, power, and cooling.
