Novo Nordisk Rebrands as Novo to Regain Obesity Drug Market Lead
Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company behind the weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, announced a rebrand on Monday, shortening its day-to-day name to simply "Novo" in an effort to become more recognizable and consumer-focused. The company will retain "Novo Nordisk" as its legal corporate name. The rebrand was unveiled by CEO Mike Doustdar as part of a broader strategic shift to regain market leadership in the competitive obesity drug sector. "We need to reinvent the company," Doustdar told Denmark's TV2, explaining that the change reflects a shift in customer identity from "patients" to consumers who "just want to lose weight." The move comes as Novo Nordisk faces intensifying competition from rival Eli Lilly, which now holds a dominant 60.9% share of the weight-loss drug market compared to Novo's 38.8% in the second quarter, according to IQVIA data cited in financial reports. The company's shares have fallen 15% in 2026, and Morgan Stanley recently downgraded the stock to underweight after Novo halted trials for an experimental cardiovascular drug once seen as a key diversification opportunity.
