Nottingham inquiry: Victim's death preventable

A public inquiry into the Nottingham attacks has heard that the death of 19-year-old student Barnaby Webber was potentially preventable, with experts suggesting more aggressive medical treatment at the scene could have offered him a chance of survival. The inquiry, examining the events of June 13, 2023, when Valdo Calocane killed Mr. Webber and fellow student Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, before fatally stabbing caretaker Ian Coates, 65, and attempting to murder three pedestrians, has also revealed significant criticism of Nottinghamshire Police. An expert medical panel, tasked with assessing the survivability of the victims' injuries, concluded that while Mr. Webber received extensive treatment, his death could have been prevented if volume resuscitation had been administered more aggressively at the scene. This could have allowed him to reach the hospital with a sufficient heartbeat for surgery, though the panel noted there was a small chance, less than 50%, of him surviving his injuries. In contrast, the panel found the injuries sustained by Ms. O'Malley-Kumar and Mr. Coates were not survivable, even with immediate enhanced care.
