Norway Seizes Russian Ship Over $4.2B Naftogaz Award

Norwegian authorities seized a Russian research vessel in the Svalbard archipelago on Wednesday, acting on a court order to enforce a $4.22 billion arbitration award owed to Ukraine's state energy company Naftogaz. The ship, the Professor Molchanov, was detained while docked in the Russian mining settlement of Barentsburg and barred from leaving until further notice. The seizure was carried out under an August 31 order from the Nord-Troms and Senja District Court, which granted Naftogaz the right to seize the vessel as part of its global effort to collect compensation from Russia. The company has been pursuing legal action since 2016 over assets it lost following Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014. A tribunal in The Hague ruled in April 2023 that Russia must pay Naftogaz 4.22 billion, plus interest and legal costs, but Moscow has refused to comply. Naftogaz Acting CEO Sergiy Fedorenko called the move "another important step towards restoring justice" and pledged to continue pursuing Russian assets worldwide until the award is paid in full. The Governor of Svalbard confirmed the ship was seized and will be held on the island until the court decides its next steps.
