Norway plans temporary limits on AI glasses

Published 6 October 2026

Norway’s government plans to propose a temporary restriction on AI glasses in selected locations, citing concerns that people could be photographed, filmed or recorded without their knowledge. The measure is not yet law: the government says it will submit a bill to parliament as soon as possible, and the proposal’s scope and outcome remain unsettled. Digitalisation and Public Governance Minister Torgeir Micaelsen said the government is concerned about devices that can capture images or audio without bystanders knowing. The planned restriction is intended to give officials time to examine the technology and consider what longer-term rules may be needed, according to the government. Locations under consideration include schools, playgrounds and youth clubs, as well as places where privacy may be particularly important, such as healthcare facilities and gyms with changing rooms. Parks, beaches, museums, shopping centres and public events are also among the possible settings identified by the government. These are examples under consideration, not a confirmed list of restricted places. Officials have not settled which devices would be covered.
