Northern Command Deploys Troops to Rio Grande Valley

Published 3 October 2026

U.S. Northern Command said it deployed hundreds of troops to the Rio Grande Valley on Friday, October 2, under Operation Unified Response, describing the move as reinforcement for military forces and federal agents supporting border operations. The command said the operation is intended to increase patrol capacity and monitoring, reinforce key areas and support the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It did not provide a precise troop count or specify where troops were assigned in the region. A Northern Command spokesperson said the deployment would help strengthen border-security operations and improve the joint force’s ability to respond to threats. The command also said the mission would reinforce security at critical locations. The stated purpose was to support federal partners operating along the Rio Grande; the command’s account did not cite a specific incident as the reason for the deployment. The deployment followed a reported shooting involving the U.S. Coast Guard near Garceno, Texas. The incident was reported to have occurred Saturday, September 26, according to an account relayed by NewsNation. No injuries were reported.
