North Korea displays Hwasong-20 at new military museum

Published 13 October 2026

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended the opening of a new military museum displaying the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile, state media reported, as U.S. President Donald Trump indicated he might meet Kim during a planned Asia trip. The display presents the missile as capable of reaching beyond the U.S. mainland, but does not show that it has demonstrated that range or other operational capabilities. Kim visited the National Defence Revolution Museum on Sunday with his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and daughter, Ju Ae, according to North Korean state media. Photographs released Tuesday showed an array of weapons, including the Hwasong-20 on a mobile launcher, as well as drones, submarinelaunched ballistic missiles and other military equipment. A diagram displayed alongside the Hwasong-20 suggested a multiple-warhead configuration and projected reach beyond the U.S. mainland, including to the Middle East, Australia and South America. The diagram indicates how North Korea is presenting the weapon, not proof of its performance. A May 2026 Congressional Research Service assessment said North Korea had not appeared to flight-test the missile since unveiling it in October 2025.
