Norris loses Spanish GP win to VSC timing, defies official over Coca-Cola

Lando Norris lost a likely victory at the Spanish Grand Prix due to the unfortunate timing of a Virtual Safety Car, which prevented him from making a cheap pit stop. The McLaren driver, who started from pole position, was leading the race comfortably when the VSC was deployed on lap 15 to recover Lance Stroll's stricken Aston Martin. Telemetry data shows Norris had just passed the pit entry at the moment the VSC was activated, leaving him unable to take advantage of the slowed conditions while rivals Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen pitted under the VSC window. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella explained the team's decision to pit Norris after the VSC ended, stating there was no viable option to retain the lead. "The logic is that if you stay out, you stay out with used mediums that are already grained, and it means that at some stage you will pit behind the people that have already pitted on the hard tyres," Stella said. He described the timing as "incredibly unfortunate" and noted that Norris's pace was so strong it ironically cost him the win.
