Nor’easter Brings Flooding and Wind Risks to Northeast

A powerful nor’easter brought heavy rain and strong winds to the Northeast on Saturday, with coastal flooding and travel disruption among the hazards reported as the storm intensified. New York City had issued a travel advisory beginning at 2 p.m. Friday, September 25, and lasting through Sunday morning, warning residents of possible flooding, damaging winds and transportation problems. The heaviest conditions were expected Saturday, while the slow-moving storm was forecast to keep affecting parts of the region through the weekend and into Monday. In New York City, forecasts cited by city officials called for 2 to 3 inches of rain, with isolated areas potentially receiving 4 to 5 inches where bands of rain repeatedly pass. The National Weather Service forecast also warned of possible minor flooding in areas with poor drainage, while widespread flash flooding was not expected. Wind gusts in the city were forecast to reach 40 to 50 mph, particularly from Friday night through Saturday night. Stronger gusts were possible along the coast and on bridges and elevated roads. Officials warned that wind could bring down trees and power lines, causing road blockages or outages.
