Nor’easter Brings Coastal Flooding and Disruption to Northeast

A powerful nor’easter brought coastal flooding, power outages and travel disruption to the Northeast on Saturday, September 26, as high winds and tides pushed water into low-lying communities in New Jersey and New York. Emergency workers evacuated people from a waterside hotel in Edgewater, New Jersey, after the Hudson River flooded, while streets and some buildings were inundated elsewhere along the coast. Flooding was reported in coastal parts of New York City and along the Jersey Shore. In Surf City, New Jersey, water covered roads and entered homes, according to reports from the area. Floodwaters also filled streets in Hamilton Beach, a neighborhood near Kennedy Airport. The storm’s combination of strong winds and high tides was already affecting coastal locations as it moved along the East Coast. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill declared states of emergency ahead of the storm in counties expected to be affected. New York’s declaration covered Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City and Westchester County. New Jersey’s included Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem counties.
