NMDPRA orders nationwide fuel pump calibration

Nigeria’s petroleum regulator has ordered retail fuel operators nationwide to immediately calibrate and verify their dispensing equipment, warning that persistent or serious under-dispensing could lead to sanctions, including the loss of operating licences. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) issued the directive in a circular on Tuesday, September 22. It said the measures are intended to ensure accurate measurement and that customers receive the quantities of petroleum products for which they pay. The authority also said outlets found under-dispensing or using improperly calibrated equipment would be required to take corrective action. The regulator said it had observed incidents of under-dispensing at retail outlets and had intensified inspection and enforcement activities nationwide. It warned that persistent or serious violations could draw penalties up to and including licence revocation under its regulations. The directive applies to retail outlet operators across the country and calls for immediate calibration and verification of dispensers and related measuring equipment.
