Nine killed in Plateau bus attack as army chief visits

At least nine people were killed when gunmen attacked a commercial bus at Dungus Junction in Plateau State, Nigeria, on Sunday night, in an incident that has heightened security concerns in the region. The attack occurred as the bus, heading to Jos, stopped to drop off passengers. The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating it received a distress report at about 7:45 p.m. on Sunday. According to the police, seven people died at the scene, while two others who sustained gunshot injuries later died in hospital, bringing the total fatalities to nine. The police said the attackers, who were operating on a motorcycle, opened fire on the Toyota bus. Community sources and a youth group spokesman placed the time of the attack at around 9:40 p.m. The sole survivor, Nasiru Garba, the bus conductor, provided an account of the violence. He stated the driver had stopped to allow five passengers to alight when the gunmen began shooting. Garba, who had started his job only four days earlier, said he survived by bending down inside the bus. He reported that the attackers later searched him, taking his money and phone before leaving.
