Nigerian opposition figures position for 2027 election

Opposition figures in Nigeria are publicly positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential election, with one prominent figure stating he would accept a victory by President Bola Tinubu as the verdict of the people. Solomon Dalung, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former minister of sports, made the comments during a television interview on September 15, 2026. Dalung said he would not blame a potential Tinubu re-election on the opposition's failure to unite. "I will accept it as a verdict of Nigerians. It will mean that we are not on the same page with Nigerians as to the issues of the sovereignty of this country," he stated. He added that the state of the economy would be a key factor in determining the next president. His remarks follow a recent proposal from a coalition of opposition parties. On September 1, six parties, including the ADC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), convened in Abuja and proposed a "government of national competence" for a single four-year transition term ahead of the 2027 election.
