Nigerian House Dissolves Ad Hoc Committees

The Nigerian House of Representatives has dissolved all its ad hoc committees with immediate effect, citing their failure to submit reports within constitutionally mandated timelines. The directive, issued by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, was communicated through a statement from the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim, on Sunday, September 6, 2026. The dissolution is effective from Friday, August 28, 2026, according to the official circular. The decision aligns with Order 18, Rule 5 of the House's Standing Orders, which stipulates that ad hoc committees are temporary bodies established for specific, time-bound assignments and must submit reports upon completion. They are not intended to function as standing committees. Ibrahim noted that prior announcements had urged all ad hoc committees to conclude their work and submit reports. Only two committees requested and received a two-week extension in compliance with the Standing Orders, but that extension has since expired. Having exceeded the allotted time, the continued existence of the ad hoc committees is no longer tenable, Ibrahim stated, referencing Order 18, Rule 11, Paragraph 5, which governs limitations on report submission deadlines.
