Nigeria and Italy co-host $5 billion education campaign

Nigeria and Italy are co-hosting the Global Partnership for Education’s Multiply Possibility campaign, which aims to mobilize $5 billion for education financing worldwide. Nigerian officials presented the effort as a combination of domestic investment and international support, but the reports did not state how much the campaign has secured so far. The campaign was highlighted at a high-level event in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a video message, said the initiative aligned with Nigeria’s efforts to improve education outcomes through expanded access and teacher capacity-building. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented him at the gathering. Shettima said Nigeria would direct funds recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund once they had been legally cleared and were free of litigation. He also said the Federal Executive Council had approved consideration of unclaimed dividends and dormant funds for the same purpose, subject to legal requirements.
