Nicolas Cage Mansion Driveway Collapses Into Sinkhole

A massive sinkhole opened up in the driveway of actor Nicolas Cage's beachfront Malibu mansion early Tuesday morning, prompting a local emergency declaration and the red-tagging of five homes due to severe coastal erosion and pounding surf. The incident occurred around 5:45 a.m. on September 8, 2026, on Sea Level Drive, a private road near Point Lechuza. The collapse, estimated to be approximately 30 feet by 30 feet, swallowed a portion of the driveway, a portable restroom, and caused damage to natural gas infrastructure. Officials from the City of Malibu declared a local emergency Tuesday evening as crews worked against time to stabilize the area before the evening high tide. The high surf and tides, exacerbated by the lingering effects of former Hurricane Marie, are believed to be the primary cause of the erosion that led to the sinkhole. Five beachfront homes, including the one owned by Cage, were red-tagged, meaning entry is prohibited, as authorities assess safety concerns. Southern California Gas Company crews responded to a reported gas main rupture caused by the sinkhole and safely stopped the flow of natural gas.
