NFL Permanently Ends Pro Bowl Game After Decades

Published 27 August 2026

The National Football League is permanently discontinuing its Pro Bowl game, ending a tradition that has existed in some form since 1951. League officials informed teams of the decision during meetings in Atlanta on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The move makes the NFL the first major American sports league to eliminate its all-star game. Instead of a competitive event, the league will now focus on honoring 88 selected players as Pro Bowlers. The selection process will remain unchanged, with ballots from fans, players, and coaches weighted equally.
