Newsom Declares California Emergency for Historic El Niño

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on September 21, 2026, to prepare for an El Niño season that forecasters warn could become the strongest on record. The proclamation mobilizes state resources and streamlines procurement to address anticipated severe weather impacts, including heavy rain, strong winds, mountain snow, and coastal flooding. Officials stated there is a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño event this fall and winter, with a 75% chance it could reach historic strength. The emergency declaration orders state agencies to lead flood-risk-reduction efforts, stage supplies such as sandbags and pumps, and preposition critical equipment.
