New York to mail up to $200 energy rebate checks to 8.2 million households

New York state will begin mailing energy rebate checks of up to $200 to 8.2 million eligible households starting September 21, 2026, as part of a $1 billion program aimed at providing financial relief from rising utility and energy costs. The payments, which will continue through December, are automatic and do not require residents to apply. The initiative, known as the Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate (POWER) program, was included in the state's fiscal year 2026-27 budget. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the distribution timeline on Monday, stating the program is a direct response to increasing household energy bills and gas prices. "Too many families are struggling with rising household energy bills and soaring gas prices at the pump and that's why we're putting money directly back in New Yorkers' pockets," Hochul said in a statement. The rebate amounts are determined by filing status and income. Joint filers with incomes under $150,000 will receive $200. Joint filers with incomes between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive $150. Single filers with incomes under $150,000 will receive $100. The payments will be issued as advance credit checks.
