New York Times Games director killed in California shooting

Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old engineering director in The New York Times’ Games operation, was found fatally shot at Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California, on Saturday, September 26. Police said his parents-in-law, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, were detained nearby within minutes and booked on suspicion of murder. Dublin Police Services said a sergeant saw McKinsey lying in the parking lot at about 3:08 p.m. and stopped to investigate as emergency dispatchers began receiving calls about a shooting. Responding officers found him with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Authorities identified Zhang and Chen as a married couple and McKinsey’s parents-in-law. Police said witnesses helped officers identify and locate the pair, who had remained nearby. Investigators have said there are no outstanding suspects and no known threat to public safety. The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation, and police have not publicly established a motive. A New York Times spokesperson confirmed that McKinsey had worked for the company since January 2023 and was an engineering director in its Games operation.
