Netflix Cancels Sweet Magnolias Orders New Series

Published 19 September 2026

Netflix has canceled its popular drama series "Sweet Magnolias" after five seasons, the streaming service announced on September 18, 2026. The decision comes as Netflix simultaneously ordered a new series titled "Ladies of the House," created by "Sweet Magnolias" showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson and starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who will also executive produce. The cancellation was driven by declining viewership in the show's later seasons. Season five, which premiered on June 11, 2026, garnered 2.8 million views in its opening week, a 30 percent decrease from the fourth season's debut. Although viewership rose to 3.5 million in the following week, the series ultimately fell out of Netflix's global top 10 charts. According to reports, Netflix opted to prioritize "Ladies of the House" over renewing "Sweet Magnolias" for a sixth season, with the decision made just as cast options were set to expire. "Ladies of the House," based on Lauren Edmondson's novel, follows three women-a widow and her two daughters-who must navigate family conflicts and business challenges after the sudden death of the winery owner.
