Netflix and Sega Announce New Film and TV Adaptations

Published 14 September 2026

Netflix and Sega have announced a multi-project partnership to adapt three of the Japanese video game publisher's franchises into new film and television content. The deal includes a live-action feature film based on the Crazy Taxi game, a new animated series for younger audiences based on Sonic the Hedgehog, and a live-action film adaptation of the upcoming game Stranger Than Heaven. The Crazy Taxi film will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the screenwriting duo behind the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun. Producers on the project include Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film, who produced the live-action Sonic films, alongside Sega head producer Toru Nakahara. The game, which debuted in arcades in 1999, follows a taxi driver racing through chaotic city streets. A new installment in the game series, Crazy Taxi World Tour, is scheduled for release in 2027. The new animated Sonic series is described as targeting an "upper preschool" audience. It is being developed by Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara.
