Netanyahu Visits UN Without a Meeting With Trump

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in the New York area on Thursday for a brief visit to address the United Nations General Assembly, with his office listing meetings with nine foreign leaders but no meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump or other American officials. Netanyahu traveled by motorcade to U.N. headquarters in Manhattan, where he was scheduled to deliver his address to the assembly. His office said the itinerary included the presidents of Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Panama and Ethiopia, Colombia’s vice president, and the prime ministers of Greece, Slovenia and Papua New Guinea. Netanyahu’s office said he had to return to Israel before the start of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot and could accommodate only some of the leaders who requested meetings. The itinerary did not list any U.S. officials. Two U.S. officials said Trump had no plan to meet Netanyahu, though neither government publicly explained the absence of a meeting. Reports differed on how long Netanyahu would remain in New York, with estimates ranging from less than eight hours to about 24 hours. The available accounts did not reconcile those estimates.
