Neria Leiter Remains in Life-Threatening Condition

Neria Leiter, an Israel Defense Forces reservist and son of Israel’s ambassador to the United States, remained in serious, life-threatening condition Thursday after undergoing brain surgery and other procedures for injuries sustained at a West Bank checkpoint, according to Shaare Zedek Medical Center and his father, Yechiel Leiter. The incident occurred Wednesday, September 23, at the Maccabim checkpoint on Route 443, west of Ramallah. Israeli police said a driver approached at high speed while officers and a soldier were conducting vehicle searches and struck personnel at the checkpoint. Leiter was wounded, and Israeli forces killed the driver at the scene, police said. The available accounts do not independently establish the vehicle’s precise movements or the driver’s intent. The hospital said Leiter’s condition had stabilized after surgery and additional procedures, but remained serious and life-threatening.
