Nepal revises missing to 6,150 after glacial flood disaster

Nepal has sharply revised the number of people missing after the devastating August 26 glacial collapse and flood to 6,150, as the combined death toll with China reached 1,446. The disaster authority said the figure was updated from 5,179 after verifying data from affected districts. The floods were triggered by a massive glacier and ice-rock collapse near the Nepal-China border. The resulting debris flow traveled at high speed, leaving minimal time for reaction. Across the border in China, 43 people died and 519 remain missing, according to state media. Authorities have recovered 1,403 bodies in Nepal, of which only 105 have been identified. Several hundred foreigners, including tourists and pilgrims, are among the missing. The search continues, with rescuers recently discovering five bodies inside the tunnels of the Chilime hydropower project in Rasuwa district. The disaster has prompted debate over early warning systems. Some critics accused China of withholding satellite data, but Nepal's own disaster authority stated that China had approached Nepal multiple times to finalize a data-sharing agreement.
