Nepal Observes Flood Mourning Day

Nepal is observing a national day of mourning on Monday, September 7, 2026, marking the 13th day since devastating flash floods struck the country on August 26. The disaster, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche in the high Himalayas, has claimed over 1,355 lives, with nearly 5,000 people still missing, according to Nepals National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The catastrophic floods swept through Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and other districts along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems, causing widespread destruction to homes, roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure, including numerous hydropower projects. The disaster has displaced at least 32,000 families and destroyed around 7,500 houses. In observance of the national mourning, the national flag is being flown at half-mast at government offices and Nepali diplomatic missions abroad. The day aligns with traditional Hindu mourning practices, which often mark the thirteenth day after a death with rituals to honor the deceased. Search and rescue operations are continuing with significant international assistance.
