Nepal Marks Anniversary of Gen Z Uprising

Nepal on Tuesday marked the first anniversary of the Gen Z-led protests that shook the nation, demanding an end to widespread corruption and political malpractice. The commemorations, held on September 8, 2026, honored the lives lost during the violent demonstrations of September 8 and 9, 2025, which ultimately led to the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and a significant shift in the country's political landscape. The protests, initially sparked by anger over a brief government ban on social media platforms and the conspicuous lifestyles of children of officials, rapidly escalated into a nationwide movement. Demonstrators voiced deep frustration over corruption, nepotism, unemployment, and a lack of accountability. The unrest culminated in clashes with security forces, resulting in the deaths of approximately 76 people, according to various reports. Government buildings, including the parliament, were also set ablaze by protesters. In the aftermath of the violence, an interim government was formed under former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. This administration subsequently oversaw general elections held on March 5, 2026.
