Nepal Glacial Flood Death Toll Surpasses 1,000

The death toll from catastrophic glacial floods in Nepal has surpassed 1,000, officials confirmed on Tuesday, as international rescue teams race against time to reach thousands still missing nearly a week after the disaster. The deluge, triggered by a high-altitude glacier collapse on August 26, tore through towns and valleys along the Nepal-China border, leaving a trail of immense destruction. Nepal's disaster management authority reported the death toll had risen to 1,050, while approximately 4,000 people remain missing. This includes 583 foreign nationals. In China, state media reported 16 dead and 546 missing. The combined figures bring the total number of missing to over 4,400. Rescue operations are now heavily focused on several hydropower projects where hundreds of workers are believed trapped in tunnels blocked by debris and floodwaters. Specialised teams from Nepal, India, and China are deploying heavy machinery, including excavators and bulldozers, to clear access to remote areas and dig through the ruins of hydropower stations.
