Nepal Floods: 1,331 Dead, Rescue Ongoing

Devastating floods and landslides across Nepal have killed at least 1,331 people, with rescue operations continuing as the death toll is revised downward from earlier figures. The disaster, triggered by severe flooding in the Bhote Koshi river basin, has left thousands unaccounted for and caused widespread destruction to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and drinking water systems. The latest casualty update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) on Saturday, September 5, 2026, reported 1,331 deaths, a decrease from an earlier noon figure of 1,344. The initial figure from Nepal Police had been 1,341. Joint rescue efforts are focused on the Chilime Tunnel in Rasuwa district, where Indian and Nepalese teams are working to clear heavy debris, water, and mud. The Indian Embassy in Nepal reported that the joint team is operating despite challenging conditions, with debris reaching close to the roof of the tunnel in some sections. Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava stated that teams are working to remove debris to allow heavy machinery access deeper into the tunnel.
