National Guardsman Charged After Gun Incident in D.C.

A Georgia National Guardsman deployed to Washington, D.C., faces felony charges after allegedly drawing a loaded handgun during an argument with a fellow service member over Army grooming standards. Zion Mitchell, 21, was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence following an incident on August 25, 2026. According to court records and an arrest affidavit, the confrontation occurred while Mitchell and other Guardsmen were on a break inside a van parked near a Popeyes restaurant on H Street. The argument reportedly began over whether their hairstyles complied with current Army regulations. During the exchange, Mitchell allegedly threatened to physically harm the female Guardsman and then, according to witness accounts, drew his service weapon. Witnesses told investigators that Mitchell’s weapon was loaded and had a round in the chamber. Accounts differ on how the firearm was aimed. Some witnesses reported that Mitchell pointed the weapon in the woman’s direction, with one account placing it over another Guardsman’s shoulder.
