NASA Awards Blue Origin $700 Million Mars Communications Contract

NASA has awarded Blue Origin a contract worth up to $700 million to develop a next-generation communications network for Mars, a critical step in the agency's long-term plans for sustained robotic and eventual human exploration of the Red Planet. The firm-fixed-price contract, announced by NASA on September 1, 2026, tasks the private space company with designing, developing, launching, and operating a Mars Telecommunications Orbiter (MTO) by a deadline of December 31, 2028. The orbiter, which will be built on Blue Origin's Blue Ring spacecraft platform, is designed to establish a high-speed communications relay network for continuous coverage between Earth and Mars. According to NASA, the system will transmit science data, imagery, navigation information, and critical mission communications for spacecraft operating on and around Mars. The network is expected to be operational at Mars by 2030. The award marks a significant expansion of NASA's strategy to leverage commercial partners for deep-space infrastructure.
