NAFDAC Destroys N1.5 Trillion in Fake Goods

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed regulated products valued at over N1.5 trillion since 2023 as part of intensified efforts to combat counterfeit, adulterated, and unsafe goods circulating in Nigeria. The agency reported a significant operation between February and March 2025, which saw the seizure and destruction of products loaded in more than 137 40-foot truckloads, primarily from Idumota, Onitsha, and Ariaria markets. NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated on Monday, September 7, 2026, that the agency receives more than 200 complaints monthly from Nigerians regarding suspected counterfeit products. She urged the public to report concerns through official NAFDAC channels rather than relying solely on social media, emphasizing that social media allegations alone are insufficient to confirm a product's status without scientific testing and regulatory investigation. Adeyeye cautioned that some social media narratives might be driven by commercial motives.
