Mother, 2-year-old daughter killed by lightning in Margate, Florida

A mother and her 2-year-old daughter were killed by a lightning strike in Margate, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, August 23, 2026, as they attempted to get out of their vehicle and into their home during a sudden thunderstorm. The victims were identified as Kenya Glasgow, 31, and her daughter, Kennedi. The tragic incident occurred in a residential neighborhood near Northwest First Street, approximately 40 miles north of Miami. According to the Margate Police Department and Margate Fire Rescue, emergency personnel responded to a 911 call at approximately 2:30 p.m. after reports that two people had been struck by lightning and were found unresponsive on a sidewalk.
